About

Kaiko is launching the Foundation for Digital Assets Research because we have observed the need for such an organization to better support the work of the many talented researchers in search of high-quality data, support, and collaborators. Hundreds of researchers around the world are studying blockchain-based digital assets, applying a diverse range of expertise in this emerging academic field.

Digital assets are inherently tied to blockchains. Digital assets are the unit of account used within blockchains to send value and pay transaction fees, thereby creating the economic incentives for users to maintain the network. A blockchain without an economic incentive mechanism would not result in a secure and decentralized distributed ledger. Thus, the study of digital assets and the study of blockchain networks are inherently linked.

Digital assets research is uniquely interdisciplinary, involving a combination of economics, computer science, mathematics, sociology, philosophy, and law. This area of study comprises research on everything from blockchain governance, consensus models, protocol engineering, contract theory, pricing models, ethical studies, and cryptography. With over three dozen university-run research centers, there have been hundreds of papers published on a range of topics in the past few years, and many more in the works.

Yet, as a data provider working with dozens of academics, we have found that there is often a lack of understanding among digital assets researchers regarding data sourcing, differences in data types, and the reliance on previous literature to inform current research. Because the study of digital assets is brand new, rigorous research standards have not yet been identified and adhered to. The Kaiko Foundation proposes to be the first unifying platform for individual researchers to connect with and view the work of their academic peers, no matter their affiliation. By providing data resources, a research database, events lists, and a forum, we ultimately hope to improve collaboration, creativity, and the production of knowledge in this fascinating area of study.
